Computer Requirements

To successfully complete distance education courses at UAA, the following pages highlight the minimum technical tools required for all students. Having regular and dependable access to these items will allow you to retrieve online digital materials, access the Internet, and log on to Blackboard. Overall performance will vary based on hardware and connection speeds.

Operating System

If you are running any of the four operating systems below, you should not experience difficulties accessing Blackboard or digital materials online.

For Windows users: Windows 2000 or XP
For Mac users: Mac OS 9 or X

If you are running Windows 95 or 98 / Mac OS 8: Click here to view the hardware recommendations for your machines.

Other hardware considerations:

Monitor – Using a resolution of 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 to reduce the need for scrolling
Internet connection – 56 K modem or better connectivity (DSL or cable)
Printer
Courses may have additional hardware requirements. Please direct questions to your instructor(s).

Software: Function
Word Processor Any will do, however, Word is the most popular. Check with your instructor on what file types he/she requires. Word tutorials link
Spreadsheet Program
Depending on the course, your instructor may require you to read Excel files or produce them. Check with your instructor to be sure. Excel tutorial link
Presentation Program PowerPoint is the most common and may be required by instructors on some assignments. PowerPoint tutorials link
Anti-virus software

For computer security, Norton Anti-virus is available free to all UAA students. ITS Technology link (http://technology.uaa.alaska.edu/computer/Software/downloads.cfm)

Spybot to combat Adware and Spyware For additional computer security and to keep your system running efficiently, we recommend a program that combats adware and spyware. Spybot link http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Word Viewer (2003')

Word Viewer 2003 (Opens MS Word documents versions 97-2003. Requires Win 2000, Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP) 2003 Word viewer

Word Viewer (97'-00')

Word 97-2000 Viewer (Opens documents created with Word versions 97-2000. Requires Windows 95 or higher) 97'-00' Word Viewer

Excel Viewer (97'-03')

Excel Viewer 2003 (Opens workbooks created with Excel versions 97-2003. Requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Excel Viewer

Power Point Viewer (97'-03')

Additional programs may be required by your instructor, so be sure to clarify that early in the course. You can check with the UAA bookstore for Educational Discounts available to UAA students.
